It's a story you couldn't make up, the role the GOP establishment in Washington DC played in the Mississippi primary and run-off election. It was an ugly race, and much of the mudslinging aimed at the GOP incumbent challenger Chris McDaniel was paid for by the GOP organizations in our nation's capital. Sen. Thad Cochran's DC establishment pals paid for advertising and radio spots that accused Chris McDaniel of being a racist. They did their best to lure Democrat voters to make the difference in a primary run off in one of the nation's reddest states.

It's not the first time the Washington DC political establishment has meddled in state GOP primaries. But it must be the last. The establishment invariably battles the grassroots. That hurts the party in the long term. If you are a Republican and you agree, please sign the letter on this page. It will be sent to the political leaders of the GOP in Washington DC.

Dear GOP leaders,

What happened in the Mississippi primary and the run-off race that followed was an absolute disgrace. Using GOP funds to accuse a good conservative of being a racist to appeal to Democrat voters in a Republican primary was simply reprehensible. It must not be allowed to happen again.

The Proper roles of the Republican National Committee (RNC), the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), and the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) must be completely rethought and repositioned. None of them should be permitted to intervene in primaries.

Their sole purpose should be refocused on defeating Democrats, not fellow Republicans. Republican incumbents should be required to raise their own money for primaries, knowing that if they win, they'll get significant help from the national party organizations in the general election.

I believe their proper role is to support the GOP candidates whom the people in each state pick, not pick those winners for them.

Last, I also believe it violates everything we stand for as conservatives to have such top down national interference in local GOP primaries.

For all of the aforementioned reasons, I ask that leaders of each of the three big Republican Committees in Washington DC – the RNC, NRSC, and NRCC – individually and collectively agree to stop intervening in GOP primaries, and focus instead on helping the winners of those GOP primaries defeat Democrats.
